Starry Night Reproductions

Inspiration: Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh's (1853-1890) painting 'The Starry Night' (1889).

I did this lesson with grade 4-6 after discussing the life and work of Van Gogh.
The students were given copies of the original painting to look at and told to reproduce it. They were allowed to change some details to make it their own but had to try to replicate the directional brush strokes that create movement in Van Gogh's sky.
We completed the reproductions in two halves. The sky was created with oil pastel and painted over with a blue edicol dye wash. The foreground was drawn onto a separate black piece of paper and glued on top of the sky background.

They all turned out slightly differently and the students were very happy with them. After completing these reproductions I played them this clip from YouTube.
