The inspiration for this project was the Chinese Terracotta Warriors, an amazing collection of ancient terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China.
This
was one of the first clay projects I ever did as a teacher and in
retrospect - far too ambitious! I had a group of grade 7 students each
create a sculpture based on one of the terracotta warriors.

A small section of the grade 7s terracotta army - well, the ones that didn't turn out too badly! |

ReplyDeleteWell, I think it is awesome that you were so ambitious and am really impressed, your students are lucky and their art looks great.
ReplyDeleteThat story of the warriors and the crazy emperor is so interesting. One of my fav things I learned in art history! What a cool project. I've never seen a middle school teacher explore this part of art history. These are amazing.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive artwork! Not just a bunch of clays, but it has historical value. Fantastic!

ReplyDeleteThat's really cool! I'm doing a project on this, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about doing an activity like this. How much clay do you give each student?
