Eric Carle's Birthday Cake

These collages were made by my grade twos back in June to celebrate the 83rd (!!) birthday of children's author and illustrator, Eric Carle.

Every child had read at least one Eric Carle book, but many were surprised to discover the collage process Carle uses to create the images for his famous stories. I recently purchased a great book called 'The Art of Eric Carle' which includes many photographs detailing his working process.

After seeing this project from 'Sun Hats & Wellie Boots', I had my students design their ideal birthday cake for Eric Carle. We then spent a lesson painting paper using various bits and pieces for texture including bubble wrap and wooden skewers.

Each student then created a fantastic cake collage using painted paper.

  1. I love these! I have seen a lot of Eric Carle painted paper projects, but never birthday cake. You made a LOT of colors - not just chocolate. Love the bubble wrap texture. Seriously - you could photograph these and sell them as birthday cards. Thanks for posting.
