Warm and Cool Hearts

Thanks to 'Kids Art Market' for this great and simple lesson I used for Valentine's Day with grade twos. 

I had the students fold a piece of paper in half, draw half a heart shape on the fold and cut the paper to form a heart-shaped stencil which was laid over another piece of paper. 

After discussing warm and cool colours, students chose whether to use warm or cool coloured oil pastels to colour over their stencil to form a heart on their page, then chose the opposite colour scheme for a dye wash background.

These are my first completed works for the school year. My grade ones experimented with creating pattern through the repetition of heart shapes drawn in oil pastels and then painted in tempera. They're quite Kandinsky-esque and just lovely.

I have been on a bit of a blogging hiatus for many weeks now due to school holidays, losing my job :( and moving house. I am now back teaching art one day a week (which is not nearly enough!) and started the school year by letting these grade 6/7s have a bit of fun with these Jim Dine inspired heart paintings for Valentine's Day.

Confetti Hearts

Inspired by American Pop Artist Jim Dine's lithograph 'The Confetti Heart'.

This project is of course also inspired by the many, many other bloggers who have featured similar Jim Dine inspired projects this month for Valentine's Day. I can't remember exactly where I got this idea but if it was you, please tell me so I can link back to your blog! :)

These collages were created by my grade 2/3 class using cut and torn pieces of coloured tissue paper and black oil pastel.
